about

At the close of 2015, it was hard to resist the temptation to use clichéd hyperboles and call this year the year of Isis Graham. She’s risen to become one of Calgary’s most prolific DJs, been featured on Vice’s Thump outlet, and her track “That Thang” was played by Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones in their set at Crssd Festival in San Diego. But in a bold move at the end of the year, Graham announced she would be adopting a new creative moniker for 2016; esette. We thought it was fitting that her debut EP under the new moniker be a calibration of what is to come.
The title track, "Calibrate" is esette's interpretation of tribal flair at its finest. Soulful organs float over an array of hand percussion and low basslines, creating a mood that speaks volumes without needing to be loud.

Spear Mouth lives up to its name. This track resembles Graham's last Substation release "You", once again showing Graham’s penchant for drawing on the sounds of trance’s early days. Spears of melodic, distorted synths produce a gradual build-up that surges into a deep, groovy bassline.

Get What You Get is a bubbly interpretation of Italo Disco through her own style, complete with her own vocals. An Italo-esque bassline is punctuated by pockets of staccato synths and ambient effects, producing a truly captivating brew.

Graham also brings her own vocals into Said Enough. A raucous four-to-the-floor kick provides the backbone for the retro-rave IDM stylings that Graham has been pushing as of late. This track once again demonstrates her ability to look back on dance music’s history while simultaneously looking forward, taking elements that have shaped the culture and turning them into something new for today.

The Calibrate EP displays Substation Recordings co-owner Isis Graham’s fearlessness in changing directions and exploring different styles. Once again, Graham has shown that each of her tracks creates its own atmosphere, one that’s distinctly her own.
